Energy

Energy is one of the largest operating costs and a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions for many businesses. TÜV NORD Vietnam certifies energy management systems to ISO 50001, independently confirming that energy is managed systematically.

Why manage energy systematically?

Energy efficiency pays off twice. Globally, it is a practical contribution to cutting greenhouse gas emissions. For the business, it lowers operating costs, reduces exposure to volatile energy prices and meets the rising sustainability expectations of customers and investors.

Isolated savings measures, however, tend to deliver short-lived results. An energy management system (EnMS) can turn energy performance improvement into an ongoing process: measure, analyse, set targets, act and verify the results.

ISO 50001 – the core of our energy services

The central service in this area is ISO 50001 certification, the international standard that sets out the requirements for an energy management system. It applies to organisations of any size and sector, manufacturing and services alike, and focuses on continually improving energy performance based on measured data.

Because ISO 50001 shares ISO's Annex SL structure (now called the Harmonized Structure) with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, energy management can be added to an existing integrated management system and audited together with other standards. The energy data you collect also provides a useful basis for greenhouse gas inventories and reporting.

Frequently asked questions

Is ISO 50001 certification mandatory?
ISO 50001 certification is voluntary. In Vietnam, designated key energy users have obligations under the Law on Economical and Efficient Use of Energy No. 50/2010/QH12, as amended by Law No. 77/2025/QH15, and its implementing regulations. ISO 50001 can be a useful framework for meeting them, but certification does not replace those legal obligations.
How does ISO 50001 differ from an energy audit?
An energy audit is a point-in-time assessment of current consumption and savings opportunities. ISO 50001 is a continuously operating management system with a policy, objectives, performance indicators and an improvement mechanism, so that savings opportunities are tracked, implemented and sustained. ISO 50001 certification does not replace legally mandated energy audits.
Can ISO 50001 be combined with ISO 14001?
Yes. Both standards use ISO's common structure (the Harmonized Structure), so requirements such as context, compliance obligations, internal audit and management review can be shared. Energy is usually a significant environmental aspect as well, so integrating the two systems keeps management consistent and saves resources.
